About us
The Baby Room at Spinners was established in 2022. We are a community interest company based in Leigh, Greater Manchester, and cover the Wigan Borough.
Started by our founder, Alison, who wanted to see the items that babies no longer needed re-used in the local community. After seeing the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on new families, and the limited social interaction of new babies and toddlers due to the many lockdowns imposed on Society during 2020, Alison saw an opportunity to bring support for new families who were experiencing financial hardship and in need of a helping hand together with the benefits of fun and lively baby and toddler signing classes, which reduce frustration and improve communication.
The Baby Room has two strands
- Baby Essentials project, which is a baby bank supporting new families with babies 0-6 months with new and pre-loved essential baby items.
- Baby Signing with Dexter classes, which are fun, lively, and interactive parent and child classes suitable for ALL babies and children up to age 5 years.
What we do
The Baby Room supports families in need with the donations and items that we receive.
We collect donations of new and pre-loved clothing, and other essential baby items and toiletries and, after checking they meet current UK safety standards, regift them to new families who need a little helping hand.
We do not accept direct referrals from families/individuals and instead receive requests from local professionals (schools, health visitors, social workers, family centres, women’s shelters etc.) on behalf of families in need across Wigan Borough. At The Baby Room, firstly, we always try and meet the request using the donated items we already have in stock. We have a monthly wish list that we use to tell our supporters what we need – this enables us to support families with donations received or we put out a request to our supporters via our Facebook and Twitter page for missing items.
Most importantly, The Baby Room prides itself on passing on items in excellent condition. We want the families who receive items from us to feel like they are receiving a gift and not a handout; all our Baby Essential Moses Basket Bundles are wrapped in ribbon and come with a personalised card.
